COVID-19 UPDATE & GOVERNMENT RESPONSE
|
- Yesterday, the Federal government announced that as of February 28, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. EST the following border restrictions will come into effect:
-
- Easing of on-arrival testing for fully-vaccinated travellers.
- All fully vaccinated travellers arriving to Canada may be randomly selected for arrival testing. However, travellers will no longer be required to quarantine while awaiting test results.
- Children under 12 years old, travelling with fully vaccinated adults, will be exempt from quarantine without any prescribed conditions limiting their activities.
- Travellers will now have the option to use a COVID-19 rapid antigen test result or a molecular test result to satisfy pre-entry requirements.
- The Government of Canada will adjust its Travel Health Notice from a Level 3 to a Level 2. This means that the Government will no longer recommend that Canadians avoid travel for non-essential purposes.

- The Provincial government also announced the removal of some restrictions at 11:59pm on February 16, 2022:

- Restrictions will be removed on indoor personal gatherings, indoor and outdoor organized gatherings;
- Full capacity will be allowed for theatres, sporting events and other activities;
- Bars, nightclubs and lounges will all be fully open with dancing permitted;
- Masks will still be mandatory at indoor public spaces and proof of vaccination will continue to be required for many discretionary activities. Dr. Bonnie Henry will review the remaining protective measures by March 15, and again by April 12.

BC Government announces additional funding for new Vancouver Chinese Canadian Museum
The provincial government announced recently that it is providing $27.5 million to the Chinese Canadian Museum Society of British Columbia to support continued planning of the museum and operations of the society, as well as the acquisition of the historic Wing Sang Building at 51 East Pender Street.
Ted Lee, Destination Vancouver CFO & Vice President, Destination Stewardship is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Chinese Museum Society.

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2022 Results
The 20th Anniversary celebration of Dine Out Vancouver Festival closed out the month of January with great success. This year, the fest shined the spotlight on 328 restaurants over 18 days, and welcomed the return of Street Food City and the Vancouver World Chef Exchange - featuring four Indigenous Chefs from across Canada who shared their flavours and culture with guests over four consecutive nights at Salmon n' Bannock Bistro. An accommodation promotion in partnership with the VHDA included a $50 Mastercard Gift Card offer for each night booked to a maximum of three nights.
Highlights include:
- Estimated total seated diners: 442,210
- Estimated average spend per guest $56.84
- Accommodation bookings via dineoutvancouver.com: 751
- Total room nights generated: 1050
- Estimated total economic spend by participants on meals and accommodation: $25.45 million

2022 Cruise Ship Schedule Published
Hot off the press is the 2022 Cruise Ship Schedule which was just released today by the Port of Vancouver. The first arrival is scheduled for April 7th. The cruise schedule is updated on a regular basis, however is subject to change at any time. For more information, please contact your cruise line.

BC Hospitality Foundation Now Accepting Scholarship Applications
The BC Hospitality Foundation (BCHF) is pleased to announce it is now accepting applications for the scholarships it administers. The BCHF is best known as the only charity in Canada that raises funds to support hospitality and tourism workers facing financial crisis due to a serious health condition experienced by themselves or a family member. In addition, the organization administers a scholarship program to foster the development of the next generation of hospitality industry workers and leaders.
In 2022, the BCHF scholarship program will be the largest ever, at over $65,000, and there are new scholarships dedicated exclusively to supporting members of underrepresented groups such as First Nations and members of the LGBT2Q+ community. All applicants must be committed to working in British Columbia for at least the next two years.
The deadline for most scholarship submissions is March 31, 2022.

Tourism industry hopes eased travel requirements will help rebuild, boost traveller confidence.
Destination Vancouver CEO Royce Chwin said the changes are a step in the right direction.“The impact should be significant given we have two of the most important seasons of the year coming up, in spring and summer,” he said. “Where we can reduce the friction for travellers, and we re-enable the movement of people, we begin to solve major problems that we have been working towards the last two years.”
