DESTINATION VANCOUVER NEWS
|
|
With appreciation, we thank Ted Lee!
After more than 29 years devoted to the tourism industry, Ted Lee, our intrepid CFO and VP of Destination Stewardship, is moving on from Destination Vancouver.
Ted has seen Vancouver grow and evolve, and tourism grow and evolve along with our city. He was here for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games that showcased Vancouver as a global destination to be reckoned with. He was here when the Vancouver Convention Centre announced its expansion—an announcement met with dire warnings about foisting a white elephant on the city. He was certainly here when the Vancouver Convention Centre became the world’s first double LEED® Platinum certified convention centre and one of North America’s premier meeting venues (and maybe say “I told you so.”)
Ted had already stepped up as Acting CEO when the pandemic threatened to decimate to our industry. He helped create and then co-chaired the Tourism and Hospitality Response and Recovery Task Force that successfully pushed for measures to counter the devastating impact of Covid restrictions. He also provided steady support and advice to Royce Chwin as he joined Destination Vancouver as our new President & CEO.
He played an instrumental role in Chinatown as past chair of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Traditional Chinese Garden and his ongoing involvement in the establishment of Canada's first Chinese Canadian Museum.
All of us at Destination Vancouver thank him for his sound judgment, careful financial stewardship, his many stories and seemingly endless connections. We know there are many new adventures ahead for him.

Taking place in Vancouver’s Chinatown on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, 2022, this free, family-friendly event reflects the multicultural vibrancy of the neighbourhood with an exciting variety of food vendors, live entertainment, artisan crafts, games, and more.
The opening ceremonies features Lion Dances—a traditional performance to bring good fortune and prosperity— and the festival weekend will be filled with fun daytime activities like an augmented reality scavenger hunt featuring Chinatown’s beloved “Van Van'' mascot via the Visit Chinatown app, and a giant Mahjong tile game (lessons are on hand for those who don’t know how to play or need a refresher). Evening events include a salsa dancing social, family movie night showing of Kung Fu Panda 2, and an all-Asian comedy show.

BUSINESS INSIGHTS
|
|
For this week's forecast, from July 4 to 10, there will be 12 cruise ships arriving at the Port of Vancouver with a decrease in the total number of cruise passengers compared to last week. Three meetings and conventions are also coming up this week which is reflected in the increased hotel bookings for stay during this time. However, total air bookings are down compared to last week, likely due to visitors coming for conventions and meetings this week who may have arrived over the past long weekend.

Thrillist
In British Columbia, Indigenous knowledge is passed over baskets of warm bannock. The bread, also known as the “Aboriginal staff of life,” is a connection to the past, a staple among nations that have existed long ago. But it continues to have a place at the table, Indigenous or otherwise, as the kind of comfort food that has no boundaries.
Food and Travel
When it comes to big cities, few are as naturally graceful as Vancouver. That is the reason I moved to British Columbia: the promise of living surrounded by lakes, forests and mountains. He wanted to be close to otters, beavers and dozens of birds. Fortunately, now I know that I am also close to bees.
