New report from Destination Vancouver says lack of hotel capacity will cost billions in lost economic impact
A study published this week by Destination Vancouver looks at the current hotel capacity in Metro Vancouver and how it stacks up against projected demand.
The main takeaway is that to close the gap, 20,000 new hotel rooms are needed in Metro Vancouver by 2050; with 10,000 of those new hotel rooms necessary just in Vancouver. Our modelling shows demand is poised to exceed supply in Vancouver during the summer months as early as 2026, and every month of the year across Metro Vancouver by 2040.
Without that new investment, the city and the Province could lose out on billions in potential economic impact, GDP and tax revenue. And new jobs.

From March 13 to 19, there will be five known meetings in the books. In addition, another event will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre: CUPE Women’s Conference, from March 12 to 15. We are seeing a decrease in hotel bookings for the next week as several large events occurring this week will end. Overall air bookings are similar to the current week, with a notable pickup in international markets.

Launch of Envision 2030 Report by Travel Foundation
The new independent Envision 2030 report, Envisioning Tourism in 2030, urges the tourism and transportation sector to unite and take full account of its greenhouse gas emissions.
The report highlights implications for each industry sector to consider, including aviation, rail, tour operators, accommodation providers, tourist boards and the car and ferry industries, as well as the need to influence other key sectors which tourism relies on. Having a model to inform the context for destinations helps organizations like Destination Vancouver understand the choices available at a local context and how it connects to the broader travel and tourism system and share this with our members.
Download the report here.
Look for a future webinar organized with the Travel Foundation to dig deeper into the results and insights from this report.
In the meantime if you have questions get in touch with Destination Vancouver’s Manager, Sustainable Destination Development, Gwendal Castellan.
