Call from Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health to regularly treat and test cooling towers and water features.
Destination Vancouver has received the following letter which contains background on the dangers of Legionnaires’ Disease in our region, best practices for controlling Legionella bacteria, and helpful resources. reminding operators in the region that the warm weather is an important time to take renewed care to manage and treat building cooling towers and water features.
The coming hotter summer weather means the restart of operations for cooling towers, decorative water fountains, and other water systems such as indoor waterfalls. The risk of Legionella, a harmful bacteria which can grow in these water systems and become airborne, is expected to increase with climate change. Our communities have experienced cases and outbreaks related to Legionella infection, which can cause Legionnaires’ Disease and other health impacts. Fraser Health Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health are recommending cooling tower owners and operators to take steps to lower the health risks related to Legionella.
Please reach out to the following contacts if you have any questions.
Note: that if your buildings with cooling towers is in the city of Vancouver there are additional regulations to maintain your operating permit. There a webinar on June 8th at 9-10am where you can learn about a cooling tower Legionella outbreak investigation in a free June 8 presentation hosted by Public Health Ontario.
